President Jonathan Appoints Sulieman Abba As The New IGP

President Goodluck Jonathan has appointed a new Inspector General of Police to replace Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar, whose tenure ends on Thursday, July 31.

The President has completed formalities after today's Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

Suleiman Abba becomes 17th indigenous IGP of the nation. He had served as the Commissioner of Police in charge of Rivers State, Deputy Force Sec, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Deputy Force Sec), Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of State CID, FCT Police Command. He was also an ADC to Mrs. Abacha during the tenure of General Sani Abacha as the military Head of State.

The new IGP had served in different capacities in the Nigerian Police Force. He attended the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS) Kuru. Zone 7 comprises Kaduna, Niger and the FCT, Abuja.

The outgoing Abubakar, who is expected to complete his 35 years in service on the aforementioned date, was appointed the 16th indigenous IGP in January 2012, after taking over from Abubakar Ringim.

A source within the presidency, who spoke to The Tribune revealed that the five contestants who were screened for the position comprised two DIGs and three AIGs.

The source said the president, who had kept mute about his next choice of IGP, finally settled for a North-West candidate after a long contemplation on whether to cede the position to the North or to the South-South geopolitical zone.
