Suspicious Wrapped Object Causes Panic In Kaduna Market

An unknown wrapped object suspected to be an explosive device caused pandemonium yesterday, July 28, at the ever-busy Ahmadu Bello Way, near the popular Sheik Abubakar Gumi Central Market in Kaduna metropolis.

As the news of the 'bomb' spread rather quickly across Kaduna, motorists taking alternative routes caused serious traffic jam on routes. Moreover, scared shop owners locked up their shops and joined other residents in the race for safety amidst shouts of 'Bomb! Bomb! Bomb!', thereby causing more panic across the city.

The popular Kaduna Monday Market was also closed as traders rushed home, making calls to their family members and spreading rumours about another attack by Boko Haram insurgents.

However, when a combined team of security personnel comprising men of the police anti-bomb squad, army and other security operatives arrived the scene of the bomb scare and cordoned off the area, they discovered that the object contained waste polythene materials.

The state police command spokesperson, Aminu Lawan (SP), who confirmed the incident, commended residents of the area for their vigilance.

Lawan said: "There was such scare and panic but there was nothing as speculated. Our men, upon receiving the call, were deployed to the area and it was immediately cordoned off, while our anti-bomb squad carried out the required checks, and it was discovered that the sack contained waste polythene materials, no improvised explosive device (IED) was found in it."

Last week, over 82 people were killed in two explosions that rocked Kaduna. Reportedly, these bombs were targeted to kill former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, and Islamic scholar, Sheik Dahiru Bauchi.
