Insecurity: Air Force Officers Conduct Raid At Lagos Airport

Some heavily armed men of the Nigerian Air Force, yesterday, July 23, raided the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, disrupting commercial activities.

The armed men who were led by the Airport Commandant, Group Captain Victor Ajiboye, raided concessionaires and bureau de change shops operating in the area, searching and demanding for identification cards of intending travelers and those with them.

The men were said to be acting on a tip off of a possible security breach, Vanguard reports.

Some of the business premises raided and shut included Sulah Bureau de change, Kings Bureau De change, Vida Sem, Westgate Pharmacy, Kilimanjaro Eatery, Global Link Mini market, Eddy Burger Eatery, Famous Link, and Leader Investment Company Limited.

While the raid lasted, passengers and other airport workers who didn't have ID cards reportedly fled the halls to escape possible arrest.

Senior officials in the aviation security department of FAAN, as well as other security agencies including the Nigeria Police, Immigration, and Custom were taken aback by the operation.

Meanwhile the raid has been criticized by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, claiming it was not informed.

Only the chief security officer of the international wing of the Lagos Airport was aware of the raid.

Everyone is being security conscious following incessant Boko Haram attacks. About two weeks ago, security had been reportedly beefed up at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos with security operatives carrying out thorough screening of every passenger, following reports that the global terrorist organization Al-Qaeda might bomb airlines travelling to the United States and other destinations by means of mobile phones or laptops.
