Outcome Of Jonathan's Meeting With Chibok Girls And Parents

The closed-door meeting of President Goodluck Jonathan with the parents of Chibok girls, abducted more than 3 months ago by Boko Haram insurgents, has reportedly finished.

According to The Nation, among those who attended the meeting were about 51 secondary school girls that escaped from terrorists, their parents, some parents of girls still in captivity and community and opinion leaders from Chibok, Borno State.

Speaking with his guests at the Banquet Hall of the State House, the country leader promised to bring back the girls alive. He assured parents that the Nigerian government was doing everything possible to let the victims reunite with their families as soon as possible.

After the 2.30-hour meeting not allowed to be attended by the journalists the President's media aide Dr. Reuben Abati briefed the journalists:

"It was a very successful event and a good development because Mr. President had always been looking forward to this opportunity... Statements were made by all the representatives of people. They spoke their minds and conveyed their feelings to the President. The girls who escaped also gave an account of what they went through. Mr. President reassured them of the federal government’s determination and his own personal determination to ensure that the girls that are still in captivity are brought out alive."

Jonathan also assured the girls that their education "will not in any way suffer" adding that as soon as the missing girls are brought back home, the government will focus on restoring the affected Chibok town together with its residents.

It would be recalled that President Jonathan has met with Chibok parents for the first time since the abduction of more than 200 female students by Boko Haram terrorists, which they claimed weeks after the kidnap. Jonathan was encouraged to meet with the victims' parents and with the escaped girls by a Pakistani human rights activist  Malala Yousafzai, who has recently paid a visit to the country head in Abuja.
