Sports Ministry Disgracing The Nation At Upcomming Commonwealth Games

Team Nigeria's preparation for the Commonwealth Games, that begins tomorrow in Glasgow Scotland has been thrown into disrepute due to the Danagogo' led Ministry of Sports and National Sports Commission decision to not give them funds for their participation in the games.

Sources tell Vanguard that the ministry wants to run Team Nigeria like a business and let them develop a self sustaining strategy .

Meanwhile the Nigerian team in Scotland have been crying out for this much needed funds and have said that their preparation have been poor cause they can't give their athletes the proper required motivation and practice due to lack of money.

They cried out and said that if they fail to win any medal, its not their fault but the Ministry's fault, saying that all they have done is having some athletes go on training tour about a week to the Games.

As of last night most leaders of the Sports federations are still in Nigeria and have failed to fly over to the games due to lack of funds from the NSC. Only few have made it t o Glassgow, like the Athletics Federation of Nigeria president, Solomon Ogba who has personally invested lots of funds to train his athletes and even poach American Mark Jelks to run 100m for Nigeria in Glasgow, other federations heads might have to watch the games from home.

One NOC member said: “This is a bad situation but what can we do but to keep on hoping that things will change, We wish Nigeria well but the thing that the NSC does not realise is that we complement them at the Games. They cannot do it alone. They need us to get things done in Glasgow and if they deny us of funds, then they are denying Nigeria of victory”.

The Commonwealth games is a sporting event like the Olympics but participants are all former colonies of the English Royal crown.

Nigeria has always represented the Nation proudly at these events but if the fail to win a gold medal it would seem like a repeat of the last Olympic games.

In Brazil the Super Eagles also protested for lack of funds when they refused to train ahead of their crucial round of 16 games.
