UNN Lecturer Commits Suicide

Tragedy struck at the Enugu Campus of the University of Nigeria last weekend as a lecturer at Faculty of Law, Dr Bede Opata, committed suicide over yet-to-be ascertained reasons, according to Thisday.

The 38-year-old lecturer reportedly took his life in his apartment within the town on Saturday night, July 19, but his body was discovered on Sunday, according to sources.

The late Opata held a Doctorate Degree in Law and was said to have been employed as a lecturer in the university in 2011.

The lecturer, who a son of a former Commissioner in the old Anambra state, Chief Cletus Opata, hailed from Nsukka area of Enugu state.

There's been a high rate of suicide cases in Nigeria these days. These past weeks we have reported about some of the most shocking of them.

It was reported on July 12 that a 21-year-old student of Maritime Academy Oron, Effiong Otu, on Thursday morning (July 10), committed a suicide after his girlfriend ended their relationship.

On July 8, a 44-year-old Bank Manager, Habeeb Olatunde, who had gone missing for days, reportedly committed suicide in Ogun state.
