7 Workers Charged With Theft Of Dangote Cement

Seven persons, including a driver working with Dangote Cement Company, have been charged before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State for allegedly stealing 900 bags of cement worth N1.6 million.

The bags of cement, which belong to Dangote Cement Company, were allegedly stolen by the driver, Abubakar Abdullahi, 32; Segun Adelakun, 53; David Oladiji, 40; and Owoeye Afeez, 25.

The other accused are Onasoga Oluwagbemiga, 33; Ismaila Orilowo, 53; and Folorunsho Babatunde, 33.

The accused are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp. Innocent Uko, told the court that Abdullahi and others were given the consignment for delivery to a customer from the loading point at Dangote depot.

“Instead of taking the consignment to the customer, the accused diverted the products to an unknown destination.”

He told the court that the offences were committed at about 10.00 a.m. on Feb. 14 at Oko Afo, Badagry. According to Uko, the offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and their counsel — Mr Dapo Akinsanya and Mr Olaotan Adepoji — urged the court to grant them bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr Abiodun Etti, granted them bail in the sum of N300,000 each and two sureties each in like sum.

Etti ordered that the sureties must provide evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail conditions and adjourned the case till April 30.
