Here's is a gallery of photographs from 2013. Some of the most significant events in Nigeria, happy and sad, captured by cameras of professional photographers or by mobile phones of random witnesses.

1. Rescue workers stand near the tail of an Associated Airline jet. The plane carrying 27 people and conveying the body of the former Ondo State governor, Olusegun Agagu, crashed a minute after take-off from the the Murtala Muhammed international airport in Lagos October 3. 16 people perished.

2. Nigeria’s Super Eagles football team arrives home on 12 February after winning the country’s first Africa Cup of Nations trophy in nearly two decades. They are welcomed by an adoring crowd ahead of meeting the president.

3. The consequences of a series of explosions carried out by two suicide bombers that ram their car into the bus station in Kano, Nigeria's second largest city, on March 18. At least 41 people died in the attack.

4. The lecturers of the Academic Staff Union of the Universities (ASUU) protest in Enugu. The Union has been on strike since July 1, 2013.

5. Gunmen stormed Abuja on 20 September killing at least eight people.

6. President Goodluck Jonathan holds a memorial service for late President of South Africa and an anti-apartheid icon, Nelson Mandela, at Aso Villa Chapel on 9 December.

7. The Rivers State House of Assembly witnesses a rowdy session on 9 July as pro-Governor Rotimi Amaechi legislators battled five renegade lawmakers rooting for the political opponents of the governor.

8. 11 year old Nigerian girl Zuriel Oduwole - the youngest person ever interviewed by Forbes magazine and one of the 100 influential people in Africa according to New African Magazine - visits Dzuka Girls High School Students in Malawi, where she launched the second country destination point in her Dream Up, Speak Up, Stand Up program aimed at inspiring the African Girl Child, 2 October.

9. School burned by Boko Haram in 2013 in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State. The United Nations stated on December 16 that attacks by Boko Haram extremist sect have claimed lives of at least 1,200 people since May, when a state of emergency was declared in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states on 14 May 2013.

10. Aviation Minister Stella Oduah appears before the House of Representatives committee on Aviation on 31 October to clarify the controversial purchase of two armoured cars for N255 million.

11. President Goodluck Jonathan shake hands with the President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Dr.Nasiru Isa Fagge; with them is Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi during a 13 hours meeting at the State House Abuja on Monday. November 4 2013.

12. Governor Adams Oshiomhole tells a widow, Mrs Joy Ifijeh, who kneels before him begging for little means, to "go and die" in Benin, the Edo State capital, on November 28.

13. Golden Eaglets celebrate as they won the Under-17 World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Mexico in Abu Dhabi on 8 November.

4. Victims of an attack carried out by the members of the Nigerian Islamist sect Boko Haram in the northeastern town of Bama, Borno State on 7 May. This attack, one of many in 2013, left 55 people dead.

15. A new faction of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) announces that it has taken over the party at a press briefing in Abuja on August 31. Abubakar Kawu Baraje, a former acting National Chairman of the PDP, is announced as the leader of the faction.
