Nigerian Are Getting Impatient With Buhari's Indecisiveness

Editor'note: President Buhari's "inactivity" after 3 weeks since the inauguration, especially the fact that some key members of his administration are yet to be appointed, has become the main topic for discussion among the concerned Nigerians. Undoubtedly, the president is "not a magician", however, there cannot be any further steps until the cabinet of ministers is established.

Hussain Obaro, constant Legit.ng guest author, shares his own view on why Buhari is so slow with appointing key ministerial officials.

Story highlights:

- "Delay in the key ministerial appointments makes kin watchers and political enthusiasts turn sceptical about a new administration".

- "Analysts have concluded that President Buhari might have been boxed into the corner and forced to satisfy all interest groups the APC is made up of. It might be the major reason why the government machinery is yet to be put in place".

- "We hope to see Buhari naming his cabinet members and other appointees in the coming few days so that to take him seriously".

It’s been 3 weeks since the lifespan of a new administration began, and Nigerians have started showing frustration and impatience about the fact that it is taking unnecessarily long for Buhari-led government to settle down and set the ball rolling. It’s not what one would naturally expect from President Buhari who has contested in the elections for 3 times before. Apart from the past presidents who mostly got into the position “by accident”, without adequately preparing for the challenges of governing the nation, Buhari has been getting ready for the last 12 years. Hence, those expecting the president to hit the ground running from day one are deeply disappointed now.

Delay in the key ministerial appointments makes kin watchers and political enthusiasts turn sceptical about a new administration. Some people have alluded that President Buhari is not a magician, and there is the need for Nigerians to be patient. However, the fact that Mr President has been unable to even appoint a secretary to the government of the federation up to now confuses the well-meaning Nigerians. Ministers are the representatives of the president, and they are responsible for rolling out and implementing policies and programs. So, the fact that we do not have a cabinet in place yet means that the APC-led government may not understand how important it is to urgently start fixing the rot in accordance with the yearning and aspirations of Nigerians.

Analysts have concluded that President Buhari might have been boxed into the corner and forced to satisfy all interest groups the APC is made up of. It might be the major reason why the government machinery is yet to be put in place. If this is true, the change Nigerians voted for may have been hijacked by the APC clout. The recent political events point out that the real change may take some more years to finally come. Due to Buhari’s vast political experience and the fact that he had 12 years to prepare for presidency, many of us thought he would make a list of cabinet members, and heads of parastatals and agencies even before the swearing-in day. Appointments should be made with due consideration of past achievements records, integrity and sensitivity to the pitiful plight of Nigerians, not the interests of any APC clout.

We have already entered the 3d week of the APC rule.  Nigerians are already running out of patience, and the words on the lips of many are: "When will this government begin implementation of the change we were promised?" We hope to see Buhari naming his cabinet members and other appointees in the coming few days so that to take him seriously. The capacity, honesty, sincerity and capability of the APC-led government to meet the needs of Nigerians can be indicated only through the caliber of the appointed ministers, and heads of parastatals and agencies. The popular saying “show me your friend, and I will tell who you are” will be brought to bear when the appointments are finally made. Nigerians are eagerly waiting to know the friends of the president so that to understand if change has finally come.
