He said that he would not join those criticising Buhari for allegedly saying that age might limit his performance.

The president had on June 16, while addressing the Nigerian community in South Africa, said: “I wish I became Head of State when I was a governor. Now at 72, there is a limit to what I can do.”

The comment has attracted countrywide disapprovals from angry Nigerians, who have been asking Nigeria's leader to take the exit door if he is not able to face the heat of governing.

However, State House in a statement released on June 17 said that Buhari's words were quoted out of context.

The statement defined the president as an ‘old wine whose taste gets better with age.’

Meanwhile, Fayose who had earlier called for Buhari to be barred from contesting the March 28 election because of his age, said Nigerians should pray for the new leader instead of attacking him.

“No, no, we cannot comment on that, but all that we owe the President is to pray for him to be able to do the demands of his office,” the governor’s spokesman, Lere Olayinka, said yesterday.
