"Calls For Ekweremadu's Sack, An Exercise In Futility"

The call by the aggrieved senators of the All Progressives Congress that the deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu should resign has been vehemently rejected by the Peoples Democratic Party senators.

The APC senators also known as Senate Unity Forum had on Saturday,June 13, demanded the immediate resignation of Ekweremadu, as part of conditions that they say would make them recognise Senator Bukola Saraki as the President of the Senate.

Senator Kabir Marafa, spokesperson for the group told Punch in a telephone interview that he and his group had nothing personal against Ekweremadu but their grudge was the way and manner he got voted with 54 votes against 55, which they say is the simple majority.

But the PDP senators in the upper chamber have vowed to resist any attempt to remove Ekweremadu. Reacting, Senator Abiodun Olujimi, representing Ekiti-South Senatorial District, said “no back-door arrangement could remove him.”

Olujimi, who is a former deputy governor of Ekiti state, challenged the APC senators to either go to court or commence impeachment moves if they wanted the deputy senate president out.

She queried: “The APC senators should stop making such demands, because it is an effort in futility. How do they think that they could ask someone who won an election overwhelmingly among his colleagues to resign in order to satisfy some interests within their party?"
