Aisha Buhari Makes First Demand From President

The wife of Nigeria's president, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, has made her first demand from her husband as Nigeria's 'first lady'.

Mrs. Buhari who was speaking during a dinner she held Saturday, to appreciate women and youths for their support, appealed to president Muhammadu Buhari to ensure more participation of women in the affairs of the government.

During the event held at the old Banquet Hall of the presidential villa, Abuja, the president's expressed concern that the number of elected women in governance had reduced drastically in this new dispensation, especially at the national and state assemblies.

She said: “This is not fair; we are not asking for equal representation but fair representation in governance.

“We must all make case for the fair representation of women and other challenges facing them especially the high rate of divorcees in the north and harmful widowhood practices in some part of the south east".

While expressing regrets at the rising rate of divorce among young women, Mrs. Buhari called for government intervention, adding also that: “also, the issue of sexual harassment of female students in our tertiary institutions must be checked".

Recall that Mrs. Buhari broke down in tears when she visited some parents of the missing Chibok girls on Friday, June 12.
