Buhari Set To Take One More Petroleum Position

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari is set to take one more petroleum position.

Buhari plans to become the next President of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), as the country still holds the seat, an official of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said on June 4, Thursday, in Abuja.

The politician, who asked not to be named, said the exit of Diezani Alison-Madueke, ex-minister of petroleum resources, had nothing to do with the status of Nigeria as the President of the group.

The official said the post would be filled after the nomination of a new minister of petroleum by Buhari.

It is widely considered that the leader of the country will double as the Minister of Petroleum in a bid to rid the ministry of the massive corruption that has overwhelmed it.

The source said the ex-minister was elected at the 166th General Meeting of the OPEC, not in her own capacity but to introduce our country.

Diezani was elected the president of the international oil body on November 27, 2014 but commenced to occupy the office in January 2015.

The official added that the OPEC president is expected to serve for a period of one year and to chair over the meetings of the conference in the course of that presidency.

OPEC reportedly has Alternate President who exercises the responsibilities of the President during an absence, or when the current one is incapable to carry out the responsibilities.

There were reports that President Buhari is set to become Nigerian next minister of petroleum resources as he rather appoint himself than trust anyone else with the main source of Nigeria’s revenue.
