Ex-Governor Pelted With Stones, Others Amidst Insults

The ex-governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, was embarrassed today, May 29, during the inauguration ceremony of the state governor-elect Alhaji Abubakar Bello.

Aliyu, who came to the inauguration as it is the tradition, was booed, stoned and insulted by some of the people in the crowd, who called him several derogatory names at the Bako Kontagora  memorial stadium, where the ceremony was held.

The military men attached to the ex-governor had to release several gun shots and tear gas before they could drive him out of the stadium successfully because the crowd were becoming violent.

The ex-governor was booed and stoned by the angry crowd, who called him several names, The Nation reports.

Shouts of “Barawo,”  “Thief,”  “Ole” “Change has come,”  “Your time is past, go,” filled the air at the stadium as Aliyu climbed the podium to be honoured by the military guard as he arrived the venue at about 10.15am.

The organisers of the ceremony had to abandon the idea of Aliyu making a speech at the ceremony as earlier planned after sensing the tension in the stadium.

The speech was then made by the outgoing secretary to the state government, Seidu Ndako Kpaki.

As the ceremony went on, precisely at about 11.00am when the new governor was taking his oath of office, Aliyu was pelted with slippers and sachet water, forcing his security details to form human shields round him as the ceremony lasted.
