Amid the xenophobic attacks in South Africa directed at foreigners, another Nigerian has reportedly been targeted in Johannesburg.

With the crisis escalating, Muhammadu Buhari, the president-elect, commended President Goodluck Jonathan over the steps taken by his government to protect Nigerians from the violence in South Africa.

In a statement dating back to April 16, Thursday, Buhari said that Nigeria’s Head of Mission in Pretoria had taken the right steps by advising the Nigerian community in South Africa to close their shops, stay home and keep out of trouble, Premium Times reports.

"We equally understand that the South African government is making efforts to bring an end to this unfortunate situation. In the meantime, Nigerians in South Africa should abide by the words of caution extended them by their government representative in Pretoria."

Regarding the effort by the Federal Government, the APC politician said:

"I am happy to see that the Nigerian government is very well aware of its responsibilities to its citizens in South Africa."

Aggression towards the immigrants in South Africa was apparently triggered by King Goodwill Zwelithini who last month said that foreigners must pack up and leave the country.

Numerous African countries have started evacuating their nationals. The main reason for this year's violence is believed to root in the poor economic state and the high level of youth unemployment in South Africa.
