Chief Obasanjo Advises Buhari

The ex-president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has advised the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, to realize that Nigerians are expecting a lot from him when he finally takes over power on May 29.

The former president is now in Sudan as an AU observer in the country’s presidential poll.

Obasanjo, speaking with Premium Times about Buhari's victory, said he was not ready to “say too much” about the poll but stated that Nigerians have passed a message to the Buhari by asking for change.

“Nigerians have done what needed to be done,” he said.

Obasanjo also called “what has happened” phase 1. He said phase 2 would be how the new administration establishes itself.

“Everybody needs to know that expectations are high,” the ex-president said.

It should be noted that the former leader wrote a letter to the president-elect after the latter was announced the winner of the poll, and asked Buhari to pay more attention to institutional reforms in Nigeria.

Although, Obasanjo, who recently shred his Peoples Democratic Party membership card to pieces, has not joined Buhari’s party, the All Progressives Congress, many Nigerians consider he voted for the former head of state in the March 28 presidential poll.

The ex-president was instrumental to the emergence of Goodluck Jonathan as president, but fell out with Jonathan after the president announced his desire to contest for a second term.

Obasanjo consistently claimed that Jonathan promised to stay in power for a single term before handing over to someone from northern Nigeria.
