Nanny Demands N15m For Kidnapped Lagos Children

Nanny Demands N15m For Kidnapped Lagos Children

Following the news of the three children kidnapped two days ago in Surulere area of Lagos state by their nanny, there have been further developments.

The Punch reports that the nanny, Mary Akinloye, has demanded N15m from the victim’s parents. It was revealed that the family was contacted on Thursday by the suspect and accomplices. They were said to have demanded the N15m as a ransom.

Reports had gone viral on various social media websites including the other instant messaging applications like BBM and Whatsapp on Wednesday that the Orekoya family had posted information on OLX, an online sales portal, seeking the service of a nanny. The said nanny, Akinloye indicated interest and gave the Orekoyas the contacts of two people who she said were her relatives.

It was reported that the family agreed to formalise documentation with the purported relatives before the week ran out. After the 23-year-old resumed work on Tuesday, she was said to have taken the three children ─ Aderomola (11 months old), Adedamola (4 years old), Demola (6 years old) ─ out, while their parents were away. She had since not returned. A family friend, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the kidnappers contacted the family and demanded N15m on Thursday.

The information was confirmed by another friend who put up the post on a social medium, Facebook. He said, “Is it a crime to employ a house help? The kidnappers have demanded N15m.” Efforts to reach the family were abortive as they continued to reject calls made to their lines. They also did not reply to three text messages sent to them on the matter.

The police public relations, Kenneth Nwosu, said investigations were continuing. He said, “Investigations are on and that is all I can say for now."

“There are things you do that can jeopardise investigation. What is important in a case like this is to ensure that the children are returned hale and hearty. There are information you may have and if you disclose it, you could break the line of communication. So, we are still on the matter to ensure the safe return of the kids.”

However, the mother of the three kidnapped children, Mrs. Adebisi Orekoya, has made it known that she has opened a bank account into which she is urging members of the public to donate money for the N15million ransom demanded by the abductors. While speaking with Newsbreak.ng earlier today, Mrs. Orekoya said the abductors, working with the housemaid, phoned the previous night demanding the above stated sum as ransom. According to her, she pleaded that she could not raise the sum demanded and requested that it be reduced.

The request angered the caller, who switched off the phone. Her efforts to call back were unsuccessful and she resorted to sending a text message to continue her plea for a reduction. But the text was neither acknowledged nor replied to and the kidnappers haven’t called back since. She explained that the account, domiciled with the United Bank for Africa, where she works, is opened in the name of Adedamola Orekoya, the eldest of the three abducted kids. The account number is 2055934684.

Before making the request for the ransom reduction, Mrs. Orekoya said she was allowed to speak with her children to confirm if they were still alive. The maid was employed via OLX and disappeared with the children from their home at 35 Lawanson Road in Itire area of Lagos on Wednesday.
