US President Spoke To Buhari, Jonathan On Phone

The president of the United States of America, Barack Obama, called to the Nigerian president-elect Muhammadu Buhari and current leader Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday, April 1.

The US president commended both for their roles in Nigeria’s first democratic handover of power.

He spoke to the men individually to "commend them for their leadership during Nigeria's election," the White House said.

"This historic step for Nigeria and Africa," said Obama's national security adviser Susan Rice.

"President Jonathan has acted as a true statesman, putting Nigeria first at a truly historic moment."

The most populous African country boasts huge natural resources and Africa's largest consumer base, but has been overwhelmed by poverty, poor government and a bloody terrorism by Boko Haram.

The poll has raised hopes that Nigeria may be ready to turn the corner.

Obama's government has poured praise on Buhari and Jonathan after the presidential election in Nigeria.

Buhari's victory and Jonathan's quick concession has helped to open a new chapter in the country's often turbulent history.

The country has suffered six military coups since independence from Britain in 1960 and has seen 16 years of unbroken civilian rule by the Peoples Democratic Party.
