Boko Haram Attack Babban Gida Town, Yobe State

Boko Haram suspects allegedly attacked Babban Gida town, the headquarters of Tarmuwa LGA, Yobe State.

The incident occurred in the evening of January 3 in Babban Gida situated 50km from capital Damaturu, Daily Trust reports.

One of the locals identified as Mohammed Lurwan said:

"A security man close to the Local government secretariat said the insurgents set ablaze both the military camp and the LG secretariat."

Chairman, Tarmuwa Local Government Council, Alhaji Samaila Mai Adamu confirmed that the secretariat had been burnt and the military base had been destroyed, adding however that "the situation is under control as soldiers have dispatched reinforcement".

Meanwhile a total of 13 local government areas are said to be under Boko Haram control in the North-East of the country.

It is feared that the February elections would not be conducted in those regions over security issues. Besides, many people in the affected areas either fled their homes or were killed.

The military insist that the seized territories would be liberated, which will allow all the Nigerians to take part in the voting process.

Also, President Goodluck Jonathan had previously made a promise that the elections would be held in all parts of the country.

Apart from attacking the territories, the insurgents continue carrying out mass kidnaps.

The news broke out yesterday that the militants had kidnapped 40 youths in Malari, Borno State on New Year's Eve. Earlier in December 185 females and children were abducted in Gumsuri village of the state.
