Withdrawal Of Security Details: Tambuwal Sues IGP

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has sued the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, following the withdrawal of his security personnel by the Nigerian police.

Tambuwal was said to have stormed the Federal High Court in Abuja along with his lawyers and members of the House at about 12:40 p.m. to file a suit challenging the withdrawal of his security details, PM News reports.

As the number four citizen in the hierarchy of protocol Nigeria, the Speaker is entitled to security protection by the security agencies.

Following his defection from the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party, to the opposition All Progressive Congress, in the early hours of Thursday, his security details were withdrawn.

The Nigerian Police had cited Section 68 (1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution as amended as the reason for the withdrawal of Tambuwal’s security aides.

The section reads: “A member of the Senate or of the House of Representatives shall vacate his seat in the House of which he is a member if – (g) being a person whose election to the House was sponsored by a political party, he becomes a member of another political party before the expiration of the period for which that House was elected.”

Not long after the withdrawal of his security details, the Speaker and the APC strongly condemned the action.

Tambuwal had on Tuesday, October 28, formally announced his defection from the PDP to the APC,shocking his colleagues.

According to report, the PDP is planning a shocker for Tambuwal as he may be barred from entering his office.

A top Presidency source explained that the decision to strip Tambuwal of all the rights and privileges was taken based on legal submission.
