Tambuwal's Security Details Withdrawn by FG

The security details attached to the Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has been reportedly withdrawn by the Federal Government.

It was gathered by Daily Trust that the security details were withdrawn in the early hours of this morning.

"Early this morning, few minutes after midnight to be precise, top level security report informed the Speaker that orders have been given for the withdrawal of his security details,” a source said.

Tambuwal, as speaker, is entitled to high-level security made up of men from the police, Civil Defence Corps and the Department of State Service (DSS).

The withdrawal of Tambuwal’s security details has been confirmed by the Nigerian police.

A statement by the police spokesperson, Emmanuel Ojukwu reads: “In view of the recent defection by the Right Honourable Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, CFR, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, from the People Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC), and having regard to the clear provision of section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has redeployed its personnel attached to his office."

Tambuwal had on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, formally announced his defection from the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

Federal Government withdrawing his security details may not be unconnected with his defection.

Following his defection, the PDP national leadership had said the “honourable and responsible” action for the speaker would be to resign from his position as Speaker having left the party that brought him to the House of Representatives in 2011.

The PDP also acknowledged it may lack the two-third support which is required to force the speaker out.

The speaker received a standing ovation on Wednesday when he led more than 50 members of the house to the APC mini convention in Abuja.

Tambuwal, a three-term member of the House, was elected into the House of Representatives on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).

He has held several offices in the House. In 2005, he became the Minority Leader of the House until he defected to the PDP. Upon his re-election to the House in 2007, he was also elected the Deputy Chief Whip.
